Water overflows from Siruvani Dam

Coimbatore: After a nerve-wracking wait because of delayed monsoon, the Siruvani Dam got filled up on Saturday and surplus water overflowed from it.

This ends the anxious moments the Coimbatore Corporation and other local bodies dependent on the Siruvani scheme for drinking water went through during May and June.

Official sources in the civic body said that with the Pilloor Dam already full, the city was more than comfortable in terms of availability of drinking water in both the dams.

While the Corporation and other local bodies never had to worry over the Pilloor situation as the dam always had water to meet their demand, every year provided anxious moments in the case of the Siruvani scheme.

Over the last 10 days, the dam received 140 mm to 190 mm rain.

Heavy rain in the Mukthikulam area in the upper reaches of the Siruvani Hills brought copious inflow to the dam through many falls. This raised the water level in the dam by five feet to six feet every day.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam said on Saturday that the Corporation could not have better news than that of the Siruvani Dam filling up. While the Pilloor situation had been managed even during line bursts, tiding over scarcity under the Siruvani scheme had not been an easy task.

Despite the level dipping fast, the situation was managed this time by re-scheduling water supply to once-in-four-days.

It took only about 50 million litres a day (mld) from the dam, as against the allotted quota of 87 mld.

But, the quick rise in the level led to the Corporation switching back to alternate day supply from Friday.

While the Corporation could get back its full quota of 87 million litres a day because of the overflow, water supply officials said there would not be much of a change in the situation for the suburbs covered under the Siruvani scheme. This is because their quota remained very limited despite the rise in population and also the abundance in the Siruvani Dam.
